'Instead of doctors, they send police to kill us': locked-down Rio faces deadly raids. Covid-19 quarantine has not stopped police from storming favelas, with 13 killed in the latest operation.

This situation is even sadder when you consider that all the coronavirus response, inside the favelas, was organized by their own residents, who hired doctors and ambulances to be at their disposition, if the need arrived. The residents also converted local schools into public-shelters, for the contamined to have a place to stay away from their families, so they don't increase the spread. Favelas are mostly made of very tiny houses, where many people live in small spaces, in a way that talking about social distancing there is kind of a bad joke. So they have been creating these initiatives to try to contain the problem. It's incredibly sad, since they also pay taxes, a LOT of taxes, and have zero return. In fact, their taxes are used to kill them. :/

P.S.: don't take this as if they have some kind of incredible private-funded virus response. It's the bare minimum. The Paraisopolis favela, in São Paulo, for example, hired 3 ambulances and 2 doctors. They have 100,000 residents.
